At a time when the federal government has suspended "Don't ask, don't tell" so that gays can be used for fodder (while reserving the right to throw them out of the military without benefits when peace comes), its claim of impotence in the face of states' rights hardly seems sincere. The government could make equal payment if it wanted to (as I understand it, the payments don't implicate the states at all). The federal government has made it clear that it would have no problem being inconsistent with a state that gave gays greater rights than the federal standard -- it is only when the inconsistency would benefit gays that the government claims the states' rights are of paramount import. If you're going to discriminate, at least have the decency to be honest about it. However, she states that her husband provided her with $1.4 million in insurance, that she would not be able to benefit from the Victim Compensation Fund of 2000. The fund should assist her until she receives her insurance. At that time $1.4 million will, when invested, provide her with approximately $70,000 to $75,000 per year. Funds disbursed through the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund of 2001 should only go to the surviving family members of those who died on 9-11. Funds must go to the widows, widowers, orphans, and other blood-related or adopted members of the family--not to unmarried sexual partners of those who died. To provide funds to "domestic partners" is to undermine the traditional definition of marriage and family to include any number of sexual liaisons between same-sex or opposite-sex unmarried couples. Many homosexuals and swinging heterosexuals, for example, engage in sex with multiple partners. Do we provide funds to each of the sexual partners? Where do we draw the line on how many "domestic partners" a person may have? Homosexual activists are exploiting the 9-11 tragedy by asking the federal government to redefine what constitutes a legitimate "family" under the law. In fact, homosexual activist , writing in Out magazine has openly called for the subversion of the concept of marriage between a man and a woman. He has urged homosexuals to fight for the legalization of homosexual marriages and once legalized to "redefine the institution of marriage completely . . . . to debunk a myth and radically alter an archaic institution. . . . The most subversive action lesbians and gays can under take--and one that would perhaps benefit all of society--is to transform the notion of 'family' entirely." If the DOJ provides funds to "domestic partners," it will be helping accomplish his goal: That of redefining marriage and altering what he calls an "archaic institution." We also oppose September 11th Funds going to the estates of the deceased instead of to their surviving family members. No one can know for certain where these funds will end up if they are deposited in the estate of a person who has died. The person may have willed his estate to a terrorist, racial hate group, or even to an organization like the North American Man-Boy Love Association. No one will know unless each person's will is examined by a DOJ lawyer. The money should go to the surviving family members of the deceased, not to the estate or to the surviving "domestic partner." Sunday, March 17, 2002 6:17 PM 9/11 Hello, I am writing to express my disappointment regarding the policy of the victims fund as expressed by Kenneth Feinberg in his appearance on the Sunday, March 10 broadcast of NBC's "Meet the Press"...to say that partners of Gay people killed in the tragedy would not receive compensation like everybody else is appalling...To use a situation like this for political play is distressing to say the least. I think that it is morally wrong to disregard the partners of gay victims - or the partners of any victims for that matter. They are suffering the same tragedy as everybody else...They too are feeling pain and loss...They too won't get to grow old with their partner...They too have had their lives torn apart...Isn't this a time to show solidarity...Isn't this a time to overcome bigotry... I watched the tragedy unfold form a country almost half way around the world and was moved by the strength and love that Americans showed throughout the following months...Kenneth Feinberg's comments are making me feel sick and cheated...like I have been taken for a ride...like the whole thing has been a farce... Does this mean all of the radio & television cover with the President espousing compassion & patriotism & affection for those who died - all propaganda.... Justice requires looking far beyond the last paycheck to the inherent worth of all those killed, so that a high minimum compensation level is set to lessen the disparities. It would be a double blow to the survivors to first lose their loved one and then watch as most of the taxpayer money went to those who were already well off in the first place. The second major issue has to do with recognizing the legitimacy of gay and lesbian relationships and families. Gay and lesbian families are especially vulnerable when one partner is killed. Because the option of marriage is unavailable, these families may find themselves in the traumatic predicament of having to prove that their union is legitimate. Fortunately, both the Red Cross and the State of New York have already announced that they will not discriminate against gay and lesbian families. The Department of Justice should do the same. My son, was unmarried, and as his parents we have faced numerous obstacles in obtaining assistance. We have had expenses which after three months have not been addressed. We are not eligible for Social Security payments, New York Workman's Compensation Payments, as well as the numerous charitable organizations, e.g. Red Cross, United Fund, etc. I fully understand and am sympathetic to the wives and children of other victims, but what about the parents of unmarried victims? As you know, this Fund was enacted as part of a comprehensive package which bailed out the airline industry and imposed restrictions on the rights of the victims? relatives to sue the airlines in court. We implore upon you, as our elected officials, to demand changes to the interim rules issued by Kenneth Feinberg, the Special Master. As it stands, Mr. Feinberg?s self-imposed rules fail to satisfy the letter or the spirit of the legislation which was enacted. Tuesday, January 22, 2002 9:53 AM Federal Victims Compensation Program I'm am sending this e-mail a second time because only two of the three organizations listed above received it. Obviously, changes must be made to the Federal Victims Compensation Program so that the families of the 911 heroes are properly compensated by the government. The complete and total amount allocated by Congress must be given to the families. Anything less is a complete and total disgrace. It's obvious to all sane people that the victims' families have beyond any shadow of a doubt the right to sue many of the parties involved with the 911 disaster. (See paragraphs below.) And, furthermore, never in the history of the U.S. has a person with a legitimate cause to sue been told that they cannot receive compensation because they have other financial means of support such as life insurance and pension funds. I know that the government cannot name one single case like this in the history of the U.S. If the government and Ken Feinberg apply these rules to the victims' families, not only is it a disgrace, but then the exact same rules must apply to all plaintiffs in the future. Do I have to spell it out -- if the government does not change the rules for the distribution of funds for the Federal Victims Compensation Program and give the money to the victims' families, then in the future every single individual and corporation with a legitimate case who also has financial means must be treated in the exact same manner and never ever receive a "red cent" from any ligiation. Logan Airport and the governor of Massachusetts are the first ones that should be sued by the victims' families. I would like the government to explain to its citizens how in the world the governor of Massachusettes had the audicity, must less the authority, to appoint his former chauffer who had no experience in security to head security at Logan Airport in Boston? When I heard this on TV and read about it in the newspaper, I felt like I was living in the "twilight zone." Isn't it obvious to Congress that the governor of Massachusettes must be fired and put behind bars as he has the blood of the victims on his hands. How dare he appoint his former chauffer to head security at Logan when the chauffer had no experience whatsoever. Certainly there can be no doubt that Logan Airport and the governor deserve to be sued. They are guility. The second parties that are guilty are the airlines, airports, and FAA. Certainly these groups have proved to every rational and sane person that they do not have a clue as to how to run airports. The fact that the cockpit doors were not locked is a sin. I expected to hear that top executives at the FAA and airlines and airports were fired immediately the day of the disaster. I am appalled that this has not been the case. Certainly, unless every cent allocated by Congres is given to the victims' families, they have an extremely strong case against all three of the parties mentioned above. Next on the list to be sued is the federal government and WTC Twin Tower Security/Owners. Just where was security at the WTC on 911? I was watching TV with my co-workers as the first fire was buring the Tower. And, immediately everyone in the room said this must be a case of terrorism. Why weren't people evacuated immediately. Why was the warning from Israel (the best friend and alley of the U.S.) ignored. Was security at the WTC too stupied that it had to be spelled out for them with the second plan going into the other WTC Tower. Obviously, this building should have had one of the most up-to-date evacuation plans; however, it appears obvius that it had no plan whatsoever!!! The City of NY should be sued for the substandard radios it provided to the rescue workers. According to reports on TV and in the newspapers, the firemens' radios were not functioning on the day of the disaster. In fact, the firemen were ordered out of both WTC Tower buildings, but they could not hear the warnings on their radios. Certainly, the City of NY should not try to cut expanses by provideing substandard equipment to its rescue workers. Again, you must give the victims' families the money that they are entitled to.
