Sunday, January 27, 2002 12:27 AM Victims Fund Mr Zwick; I am against any form of Federal Compensation for the Victims' Families. This will set an enormously bad and potentially very costly precedent. Will we be compensating the families of those who died in Oklahoma City as well? What about future tragedies unrealted to terrorism? Will families of victims who are killed in airline disasters be compensated by the Government? What about soldiers killed in battle? From now on we are going to have to lay down rules on which accidents or terrorist incidents qualify for federal bail-outs. This is ridiculous. The federal government has absolutely no obligation to compensate these victims whatsoever. In fact, although not politically correct, I contend that it is the victims themselves that are responsible for their own families well-being, it's called life insurance. We should have enough life insurance to reasonably cover our families' expenses for at least two years after our deaths. If a victims spouse didn't have adequate life insurance or plans for their family, why should the federal government (i.e the taxpayers) step in to bail them out? This is a matter for private charities. Americans from every corner of the nation responded by sending hundreds of millions of dollars to these victims families', where is that money and why isn't it getting to those who need it? Instead of Uncle Sam forking over tax dollars, you should be investigating some of these so-called charities (Like the Red Cross for example) who are sitting on all that cash (500 million dollars by some estimates) instead of disbursing it as was promised. This truly was a horrific crime and everyone is sypathetic to their plight, that's why we all sent those hundreds of millions of dollars in support. Find out where that charitable money is and make sure it get's to the right families quickly. As you know, international human rights standards, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, prohibit arbitrary discrimination. The US government is obligated to respect these rights. As you consider rules for administering the relief fund, I ask that you will apply basic international human rights standards, and the general principle of equality, by including among relatives eligible for compensation those who lost their life partners, as well as de facto parents or children, without regard to sexual orientation or marital status. The State of New York has already adopted such a policy, granting compensation benefits ?on a showing of mutual interdependence with the victim, in recognition that anyone who shared with the victim living expenses, day to day activities and the emotional bonds of family deserves help in this time of need.? Many lesbian and gay people were killed in the September 11th attacks. Since then, lesbian and gay surviving partners of those killed have had mixed results in obtaining equal treatment at the local level in the distribution of relief funds by private and state agencies. An inclusive policy on the part of the federal government would help establish an important principle for other such funds. As you know, the United States has committed to uphold international human rights standards, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which prohibit arbitrary discrimination. As you consider rules for administering the relief fund, I ask that you apply basic international human rights standards, and the general principle of equality, by including among relatives eligible for compensation those who lost their life partners, as well as de facto parents or children, without regard to sexual orientation or marital status. The State of New York has already adopted such a policy, granting compensation benefits "on a showing of mutual interdependence with the victim, in recognition that anyone who shared with the victim living expenses, day to day activities and the emotional bonds of family deserves help in this time of need." Many lesbian and gay people were killed in the September 11th attacks. Since then, lesbian and gay surviving partners of those killed have had mixed results in obtaining equal treatment at the local level in the distribution of relief funds by private and state agencies. An inclusive policy on the part of the federal government would help establish an important principle for other such funds. In compensating victims, real justice will be served only when all families - and all types of families - impacted by the human rights tragedy of September 11 are treated with dignity and equality. Saturday, March 16, 2002 11:23 PM I am absolutely appalled that you are denying funds to the partners of gays and lesbians! Our country is founded on the belief of separation of church and state and we are straying too far away from this principle. Gays and lesbians are denied the legal and civil benefits that heterosexuals have solely based on the prejudices and narrow-mindedness of a vocal minority of voters who are seeking to enforce their religious beliefs on others. (our current experience with the Taliban should clearly demonstrate the error of going down that path, for they are the epitome of church and state becoming one entity!) While different religions should be able to make their own decisions re: religious unions, the legal, civil, and financial benefits of domestic partnerships among consenting adults should be available to all Americans, and to do otherwise, is an example of horrendous discrimination. We need to continue to have all Americans working together despite their differences. I donated a substantial amount of money to the Sept. 11 fund, and if you disallow benefits to gays and lesbians, i would like my $500 donation returned so that I can donate to groups that will include gays and lesbians. I will encourage others to do the same, and I assure you that this will become a huge political mess. Please advise me on your intentions. The mean-spirited notion that some victims should be excluded because of private matters of sexual orientation has no place in the actions of our government.
