As a nation, we need to lift up and recognize ALL of our citizens without prejudice based on a narrow religious view. There is NO civil based reason to exclude certain segments of the good people of the US. I am writing you to ask the Justice Department to include among relatives eligible for compensation those who lost their life partners as well as de facto parents or children, without regard to sexual orientation or marital status. This importantly should include the partners and children of same sex unions. They suffer just as grievously for their deceased loved ones as do other survivors, and their need for assistance is just as great. Please do not give in to the importuning of callous homophobic groups and individuals who would have the Department of Justice limit compensation to survivors of heterosexual unions. Tuesday, January 22, 2002 6:27 PM (no subject) This is in response to the Victim's Compensation Fund that the U.S. Government set up for the victim's families. With all the donations that were received for the victim's of this terrible tragedy, we do not understand why the government has to use our tax dollars to pay the victim's families more money. With all the charity funds and the insurance dollars, why should the government give these people more money? We do not understand this!! If the government is feeling responsible for this, why not for the Oklahoma City bombing? Those poor people didn't receive a dime from the government and yet the person that committed that awful crime was a U.S. citizen. What about the poor guy that we know who was just working and fell off the roof and it killed him? Why doesn't the government help his family who doesn't have any insurance coverage? And why should the government bail out insurance companies? Isn't that what we pay insurance premiums for? So the insurance company can provide us coverage in the event of a disaster? If the money isn't there, it is only because the "fat cats" at the top have taken the money that we have paid and put it in their pockets!!! Many lesbian and gay people were killed in the September 11th attacks. Since then, lesbian and gay surviving partners of those killed have had mixed results in obtaining equal treatment at the local level in the distribution of relief funds by private and state agencies. An inclusive policy on the part of the federal government would help establish an important principle for other such funds. In compensating victims, real justice will be served only when all families - and all types of families - impacted by the human rights tragedy of September 11 are treated with dignity and equality. Jan. 22, 2002 Mr. Feinberg, I have a few concerns relative to the money Congress allocated to 911 victims. Some apparently were not satisfied. Maybe they should waive their amount. This apparent lack of appreciation is the epitome of greed! It makes me wonder if we are doing more harm than good with tax payers money for a variety of reasons. 1) Highly successful people in the past, seem to understand one thing.....Don't spend your time feeling sorry for yourself, spend your time making a difficult situation better. 2) Is Congress prepared to hand out $1.6 million every time a terrorist attack happens in the future. 3) Is this new legislation breeding ground for a new type of "Victims rights activist" movement. I strongly urge the Department to draft regulations that ensure compensation is available to all victims of the attack, including the committed partners and the non-biological children of gay and lesbian victims. Every family impacted by the events of September 11th deserves all the support we can give, including financial support, especially when childeren are involved. I really find it hard to believe that in the light of the tragic events of the 11th that you would really force people to undergo further trauma by making distinctions between families "worthy" of your assistance and families who are not "legitimate" in your agency's opinion. Feinberg September 11th Victim Compensation Fund U.S. Department of Justice 950 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, DC 20530 To Mr. Feinberg: I am writing to urge you to ensure fair treatment for all surviving families of the tragedy on September 11th, including the children and families of low-wage workers and gay and lesbian families. Under traditional rules based on lost wages, the survivors of a bond trader earning millions of dollars per year might receive thousands of times as much compensation as the survivors of a dishwasher in one of the restaurants destroyed. Justice requires looking far beyond the last paycheck to the inherent worth of all those killed, so that a high minimum compensation level is set to lessen the disparities. It would be a double blow to the survivors to first lose their loved one and then watch as most of the taxpayer money went to those who were already well off in the first place. The second major issue has to do with recognizing the legitimacy of gay and lesbian relationships and families. Gay and lesbian families are especially vulnerable when one partner is killed. Because the option of marriage is unavailable, these families may find themselves in the traumatic predicament of having to prove that their union is legitimate. Fortunately, both the Red Cross and the State of New York have already announced that they will not discriminate against gay and lesbian families. The Department of Justice should do the same.
