The way the money was handed out to the family's of the victims was truely un-fair. Yes the people who have more then one child has a higher cost of living, but someone who has one child also have a high cost of living. There is enough money in the fund to go to every person EQUALLY. Giving someone who has more children MUCH more then someone with one child is not fair. I know people also have life insurce polices but lost her husband life insurce policy from work. So I feel that taking out for life insurce polices is unfair and unjust. It is not fair that has to go through her life not seeing her father alive anymore. She is going to hardly remember her dad. No amount of money will bring back but it will help in the future. The money could pay for her schooling and whatever else might need. I think it would help to re-look at the way the money was giving out. As you know, the United States has committed to uphold international human rights standards, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which prohibit arbitrary discrimination. As you consider rules for administering the relief fund, I ask that you apply basic international human rights standards, and the general principle of equality, by including among relatives eligible for compensation those who lost their life partners, as well as de facto parents or children, without regard to sexual orientation or marital status. The State of New York has already adopted such a policy, granting compensation benefits "on a showing of mutual interdependence with the victim, in recognition that anyone who shared with the victim living expenses, day to day activities and the emotional bonds of family deserves help in this time of need." Many lesbian and gay people were killed in the September 11th attacks. Since then, lesbian and gay surviving partners of those killed have had mixed results in obtaining equal treatment at the local level in the distribution of relief funds by private and state agencies. An inclusive policy on the part of the federal government would help establish an important principle for other such funds. DC Dear Mr. Zwick: I want to express my opposition to any effort by the federal government to provide 9-11 victim compensation funds to "domestic partners" of unmarried survivors of the terrorist attack upon our nation. Funds disbursed through the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund of 2001 should only go to the surviving family members of those who died on 9-11. Funds must go to the widows, widowers, orphans, and other blood-related or adopted members of the family--not to unmarried sexual partners of those who died. To provide funds to "domestic partners" is to undermine the traditional definition of marriage and family to include any number of sexual liaisons between same-sex or opposite-sex unmarried couples. Many homosexuals and swinging heterosexuals, for example, engage in sex with multiple partners. Do we provide funds to each of the sexual partners? Where do we draw the line on how many "domestic partners" a person may have?Homosexual activists are exploiting the 9-11 tragedy by asking the federal government to redefine what constitutes a legitimate "family" under the law. In fact, homosexual activist &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp , writing in Out magazine has openly called for the subversion of the concept of marriage between a man and a woman. He has urged homosexuals to fight for the legalization of homosexual marriages and once legalized to "redefine the institution of marriage completely . . . . to debunk a myth and radically alter an archaic institution. . . . The most subversive action lesbians and gays can under take--and one that would perhaps benefit all of society--is to transform the notion of 'family' entirely." We also oppose September 11th Funds going to the estates of the deceased instead of to their surviving family members. No one can know for certain where these funds will end up if they are deposited in the estate of a person who has died. I strongly urge the Department to draft regulations that ensure compensation is available to all victims of the attack, including the committed partners and the non-biological children of gay and lesbian victims. As the non-biological mother of my six year old son, I find the prospect of excluding such children shameful and disturbing. It is unquestionable that the devastating grief and economic losses suffered by the families of gay and lesbian victims are no less than that of other families. Just as the terrorists drew no lines in choosing their victims, our country must draw no lines in compensating those who suffered the most personal of losses from these horrific attacks. Many Americans lost their lives on September 11, each of whom left behind loved ones. I urge the Department to honor these bonds by treating the families of gay and lesbian victims as you would any other. I just read an email that states gay and lesbian families will NOT recieve any of the money but an illegal alien's family will. I am disappointed in this and am actually regrtfull that I donated any money at all. I am not working currently and donated more than I could afford. I have 3 children who could have used that money and I am a straight female. However, gay and lesbian families deserve the same as ALL other families and I'll be damned if an illegal alien deserves anything but a 1 way ticket home! As you know, the United States has committed to uphold international human rights standards, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which prohibit arbitrary discrimination. As you consider rules for administering the relief fund, I ask that you apply basic international human rights standards, and the general principle of equality, by including among relatives eligible for compensation those who lost their life partners, as well as de facto parents or children, without regard to sexual orientation or marital status. The State of New York has already adopted such a policy, granting compensation benefits "on a showing of mutual interdependence with the victim, in recognition that anyone who shared with the victim living expenses, day to day activities and the emotional bonds of family deserves help in this time of need." Many lesbian and gay people were killed in the September 11th attacks. Since then, lesbian and gay surviving partners of those killed have had mixed results in obtaining equal treatment at the local level in the distribution of relief funds by private and state agencies. An inclusive policy on the part of the federal government would help establish an important principle for other such funds. In compensating victims, real justice will be served only when all families - and all types of families - impacted by the human rights tragedy of September 11 are treated with dignity and equality. Wednesday, March 13, 2002 5:17 AM Benefits for gay partners To the Benefit Administrator, I was outraged to find out that partners of gay victims of the Sept.11 attacks are not included in the aid you are distributing. I work as a federal employee, in the US Postal Service, and myself was at risk for anthrax infection. I stayed on the job, as did my fellow gay employees (most who are afraid to be known as gay, because of policies such as these). We face prejudice on a daily basis--we can't legally claim our partners for health insurance purposes, we don't receive the same tax advantages as married heterosexual couples (even though in my instance, I've been with my partner for longer than most straight people I know), we can't utilize the Family Medical and Leave Act, we can't even have our chosen relationships recognized as valid by our employers or society as a whole. Yet our tax dollars are used, as is our heroism. As are our donations to charities, when there is a time of crisis and need. We are the last group of people in this country where it's "okay" to discriminate. Is your fund going to go along with that? And if so, how can you feel in your hearts like honest, good helpers? At times, reality and science must take precedence over religious beliefs, which even though may be held by a temporary majority, often later on prove to be cruel and misguided. You say you don't want to break state laws, but it's okay to give benefits to illegal aliens? How does this make sense. This is my country that I love and of which I am ever grateful to be a natural born citizen. When something tragic happens in our country, it is a time grow, and value our diversity, and reach out to each other. If ever there was a time for UNITY, it is NOW. These are true and loving families who have lost their beloved every bit as much as any heterosexual family. Please remind U.S. citizens and the world that America is a country that values every human being equally. If you value one human being's significant other, then you must value the next.
