If you are going to deduct various items from the payment then a persons true salary should be used. My husband was 50 years old. Already you have determined that he would only work 12 more years.... well his father is in his nineties and still working!!! Also since you are only using 12 years then the salary this he was making should be used. He worked hard all his life to make the salary he was making and now it doesn't count. If you divide the amount you are giving people by the number of years they are expected to live, the amount is basically nothing. You should assign someone to oversee all this donated money, and see that it does not fall into the wrong hands, as is so often the case. Besides all the charitable contributions that have been made, are insurance payments. Taxpayers should not have to bear the burden of this expense, as there has been more than enough donated and it is the responsibility of every person to provide enough personal insurance to cover such tragedies. Check out the insurance coverage provided by the victims employer. Check out any victims personal insurance. Check out all the money that has been donated. I think you'll find that enough is provided through the private sector that public funds are not needed, just some trustworthy oversight is needed. The news that Kenneth Feinberg is not going to allow funds to gay families ,but is resorting to hiding behind outdated state laws and prejudice to refuse these funds is very disheartening. I ,like many I know, mourned for the people who were lost and for the families of those effected by this horrible event with no prejudice against anyone and I would expect the same to be done by the people in charge of the funds that ALL Americans worked to raise. I find it irritating that when organizations and people were fighting to give blood and were organizing rallies to send to the places effected that they weren't asking if we were Gay or Straight to see if they wanted our blood ,or time ,or money. I work part time in one of the many gay bars in Atlanta Ga. and saw the tears and the pain as news came across and I saw people working overtime to plan events and watched as entertainers,Actors and Singers work through their emotions to try and make people laugh when all people wanted to do was cry. It is a slap in my face and the face of everyone who worked to raise money and supplies to discriminate in such a manner. Under traditional rules based on lost wages, the survivors of a bond trader earning millions of dollars per year might receive thousands of times as much compensation as the survivors of a dishwasher in one of the restaurants destroyed. Justice requires looking far beyond the last paycheck to the inherent worth of all those killed, so that a high minimum compensation level is set to lessen the disparities. It would be a double blow to the survivors to first lose their loved one and then watch as most of the taxpayer money went to those who were already well off in the first place. The second major issue has to do with recognizing the legitimacy of gay and lesbian relationships and families. Gay and lesbian families are especially vulnerable when one partner is killed. Because the option of marriage is unavailable, these families may find themselves in the traumatic predicament of having to prove that their union is legitimate. Fortunately, both the Red Cross and the State of New York have already announced that they will not discriminate against gay and lesbian families. The Department of Justice should do the same. This is my input. I understand, but do not agree with, the strong policy reasons for the making awards without regard to what the family has accepted in charity. I believe the spirit of the law allows for such consideration. This seems to be a point of common sense. As I understand, the purpose of the Victims Fund is to meet the needs of the families. Feinberg September 11th Victim Compensation Fund U.S. Department of Justice 950 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, DC 20530 To Mr. Feinberg: I am writing to urge you to ensure fair treatment for all surviving families of the tragedy on September 11th, including the children and families of low-wage workers and gay and lesbian families. Under traditional rules based on lost wages, the survivors of a bond trader earning millions of dollars per year might receive thousands of times as much compensation as the survivors of a dishwasher in one of the restaurants destroyed. Justice requires looking far beyond the last paycheck to the inherent worth of all those killed, so that a high minimum compensation level is set to lessen the disparities. It would be a double blow to the survivors to first lose their loved one and then watch as most of the taxpayer money went to those who were already well off in the first place. The second major issue has to do with recognizing the legitimacy of gay and lesbian relationships and families. Gay and lesbian families are especially vulnerable when one partner is killed. Because the option of marriage is unavailable, these families may find themselves in the traumatic predicament of having to prove that their union is legitimate. Fortunately, both the Red Cross and the State of New York have already announced that they will not discriminate against gay and lesbian families. The Department of Justice should do the same. Since then, lesbian and gay surviving partners of those killed have had mixed results in obtaining equal treatment at the local level in the distribution of relief funds by private and state agencies. An inclusive policy on the part of the federal government would help establish an important principle for other such funds. In compensating victims, real justice will be served only when all families - and all types of families - impacted by the human rights tragedy of September 11 are treated with dignity and equality. The families of gay men and lesbians will suffer just as much financially as the families of heterosexuals would if they were not given any aid. In the event of 9/11, I can see that the old battle plan for victory is still the same: divide and conquer. She is resting for a few days after having her and &nbsp baby boy, &nbsp. As you know, the Special Master Ken Feinberg, has established a system of "Presumptive Guidelines" in determining awards under the Fund. In doing this the seems to be in direct contridiction to the intent of the Statute passed by Congress and signed by the President. He has created a one size fits all grid that does not allow for a case by case review and penalizes the families whose loved ones had life insurance, pensions, etc. The amounts set aside for pain and suffering are an insult to the families left in the wake of this tragedy. The airlines and their lobby were at work on September 12th to get Federal handouts, reduce their exposure, and limit their liability. The victims were given a "take it or leave it" offer as part of this package. This is not fair. I respectfully ask for your help correcting the inherent lack of fairness in the following areas: Non-economic damage being set at $250,000 Compensation levels being capped at $231,000 Methods used to formulate income tables The value of life insurance, pensions, etc., being deducted System used to formulate presumed income tables The terrorists murdered their loved ones and now it seems that the Government is adding insult to injury with the methods being used and the amounts of money being offered. Please do all you can to help remedy this situation. I have never, in all my life, been so upset or disguested! How are we to "unite" and "stand strong" when our government is discriminating and treating our own citizens like outcasts!
