Our intention was to help with basic necessities, to help needy families get by. We did not intend for our contributions to either enrich anyone, nor to pay for the expense of maintaining expensive lifestyles and possessions. I do not want my contributions to pay for monthly payments for expensive houses, cars, boats, private schools or country club memberships. Nothing wrong with those. I just do not intend to contribute my money to pay for them for someone else. Nor do I want my tax dollars spent towards those expenses. Those who wish to continue with the lifestyle they enjoyed previously need to have planned with life insurance or other private means. And certainly, someone who received charitable contributions to help them out should not be able to double dip, receiving a payment from the federal disaster fund for the expenditure already paid by a charitable contribution. My willingness to contribute in the future is dampened when I hear talk that the federal payment (my tax dollars) should not take into account payments already received by the families from charities (to which I might also have given). Saturday, March 16, 2002 5:26 PM 9/11 Releif Fund On September 11, Americans pulled together in a way that has not happened in my lifetime. I collected and donated money in order that those who directly lost a family member in the tragedy would be able to financially survive their loss. And I am outraged that the benefits that are being extended to illegal immigrants and unborn fetuses are being denied the families of gay and lesbian victims! It is about time that we as a country, and you as the disbursers of aid to the families, stop discriminating against the gay/lesbian/bi/trans community! A family is a family is a family; what you imagine as a family does not apply to all Americans. Under traditional rules based on lost wages, the survivors of a bond trader earning millions of dollars per year might receive thousands of times as much compensation as the survivors of a dishwasher in one of the restaurants destroyed. Justice requires looking far beyond the last paycheck to the inherent worth of all those killed, so that a high minimum compensation level is set to lessen the disparities. It would be a double blow to the survivors to first lose their loved one and then watch as most of the taxpayer money went to those who were already well off in the first place. The second major issue has to do with recognizing the legitimacy of gay and lesbian relationships and families. Gay and lesbian families are especially vulnerable when one partner is killed. Because the option of marriage is unavailable, these families may find themselves in the traumatic predicament of having to prove that their union is legitimate. Fortunately, both the Red Cross and the State of New York have already announced that they will not discriminate against gay and lesbian families. The Department of Justice should do the same. Sunday, March 17, 2002 11:10 PM September 11th I just read an article indicating that Attorney General Ashcroft has granted immunity from deportation to illegal alien families of September 11th victims. These families can come forward for financial assistance from the September 11th fund without fear of deportation. I am happy to hear it - these people are humans and are undoubtedly in need of support. Kenneth Feinberg, the director of the Sept. 11th fund, seems happy to be able to sidestep federal law to help these victims. However, he indicated that he will only grant funds to partners of homosexual victims in accordance with state law because he is afraid of lawsuits. Since almost no states recognize homosexual partnerships/marriages, it is likely that many people will be excluded from funding. Does this really seem fair to you? I would like to hear that our government is at least considering granting an "immunity" similar to the one for illegal aliens. Perhaps Kenneth Feinberg and the September 11th Fund could be immune from being sued by the states if they help ALL the victims of September 11th. I am a 35-year-old, Caucasian, heterosexual woman. Saturday, March 16, 2002 1:34 PM partners of the slain To Whom It May Concern: I recently learned that there is a possibility that the lesbian and gay partners of people who we lost on September 11th will not be receiving the same compensation as heterosexual partners. I truly hope that this is misinformation, but felt compelled to voice my opposition to this. Whatever you think about homosexuality, these people have lost important people in their lives. Whether the law recognized them as married or not, they were just as much a part of their lives as the husbands, wives, children of the other victims of the tragedy. This is not an issue of "special rights" or any other nonsense that the anti-gay forces seem to assert. This is about a loss. And, while money can never compensate anyone for their lost memories and future dreams, why add to their grief with blatant homophobia? The gay and lesbian victims are just as dead as the heterosexual ones. And their families feel the loss just like anyone. We've all heard the stories coming from the tragedy, including those of and . These were real people, not gay rights activists. I truly hope that the news stories are incorrect, but fear that they might be.
