It was the day that our national security blanket was removed and we saw just how vulnerable we all were. I remember the day very clearly. That day I remember that I was going to sleep in and go to an Aerosmith concert in Virginia Beach. I was abruptly awakened by my boyfriend who called me and told me that we were under attack. At first I didn?t believe him, but then I turned on the television to see the images of the former Twin Towers burning. Then came the word that the Pentagon had been bombed, and all I could think about was the fact that it was only two hours away from here. On the bottom of the television screen ran a red crawler with the Civil Defense System instructions saying that roads in the viewing area had been closed due to a terrorist attack. My boyfriend?s cousin actually saw the explosion and the fire from atop his office job in downtown Washington, DC. All I could think was how many people were going to be affected, and that this could lead to a lot worse than what was already happening. It was the first time in my lifetime that I was the witness to a war in my own country, and I have learned to appreciate many of the good things and people in my life.
