Tuesday, January 22, 2002 5:56 PM Comments on Victim Compensation 9/11 Hello, I understand that there must be rules and guidelines, and that with those, someone will always fall into those cracks however, i firmly believe 2 things... 1)Families should NOT be forced to calculate the "worth" of their lost family member. Finances should be the absolute least of their worries. I dont care if we are talking about the CEO of a major company, or the janitor who scrubbed his toilet. Give them funds, and give it freely, without calculating in other funds they will also get. When people contributed to these various funds, no one thought.. well gee, they will get such and such from a pension, and ok, they get insurance, oh and social security will pay this much.. if i give them 5.00 , subtract a dollar here for this, a dollar here for that. . This policy is just wrong! Even if someone killed in the attacks was still living at home, with no dependants, why should they be valued as less then someone with a wife and 6 kids? That person would probably have eventually had a wife and kids also. Their parents mourn them just as greatly as the other families do. 2)Do not make these families promise not to file a lawsuit. The first rule of mourning is "do not make any life changing decisions for one year". Give them that year to decide, btu dont without funds for them in the meantime. It sickens me to see these families having to beg and caluclate their lost loved ones worth, and seeing all the deductions ad rules that apply to that figure. The money was given to organizations freely. it should be distributed the same way it was given.
