Tuesday, January 22, 2002 9:03 AM Sept. 11th Victim Compensation Fund Comments Make no mistake, I do not wish to discount the tragedy of the events of September 11th. Nor do I wish to suggest we not honor those lost on that horrific day. I question, however, why the government (taxpayers) should take on the responsibility of providing for the financial well-being of the victims' families. And by doing so, do we not imply retroactive reparations/compensation to the families of victims of all manner of crimes, accidents, etc.? If I am run over by a bus or killed in a drive-by shooting this afternoon, my family would expect to receive insurance benefits. It is, after all, my responsibility to plan for the eventuality of my death. Was it not also the responsibility of those who died on September 11th to plan for that same eventuality? Look, this country is in a recession. Wanting to do something nice for victims and acting in a fiscally responsible manner may not be one in the same. Or maybe the current administration's strategy is to cover up its' inability to get this country back on it's fiscal "feet" by suggesting spending (compensation) programs that will push us over the edge into a financial abyss.
