While the legal status of partners of gays is certainly threatened, a result more of politics than of reason, who can imagine that their grief is somehow less than that of families of straights? And more to the point in this case, where compensation is awarded presumably according to damages and need, what basis is there to assume that the financial damage and need suffered by victims and families stands in any proportional relationship to their legal standing? As many politicians have been telling us for six months, put the politics aside and take care of our responsibilities to our fellow citizens. We don't have an official class system in America.
