Tuesday, January 22, 2002 4:01 PM Fund: Thank you for the few moments to respond and voice my opinion on the 9-11 funds that you will have to decide how to spend. I, like all Americans, feel great remorse about the events that happened on 9-11. I ,however, do have concerns about the message that is being sent by compensating victims of the event. I am also concerned that this is setting in motion future problems for this country for which we will not be able to respond. I have watched as numerous people have lined up and said that they should get a large sum of money due to the events of that day. I have also seen others go as far as to put a value on the lives of the victims and suggest that the amount should be based on the amount of income the person was making. This, in itself, says that if you were a cook for a cafe, your life was not worth as much as the executive. I hope that you would ask the family of the cook if they think that is true. I have lived in Oklahoma all of my life and can only relate this to what happened here several years ago at the time of the bombing of the federal building in OKC. After that event which claimed almost 200 victims, Oklahoma received the warmth of the nation. However, not one fund was set up to make the victims' families wealthy. I can only go back to the sayings that I grew up with....(There are no guarantees in life). That said, I think that while the events were as bad as it gets, I hope, it is no worse for the families of the event than it is for the families of the Marines who have died since that time. Death is an event faced daily, and It concerns me that the government is getting into the business of "paying for death".......
