Tuesday, January 22, 2002 5:48 PM in support of the current plan To Whom It May Concern: While I believe that household services should be calculated into the settlement award granted to each family, I am writing in support of the current plan. Families should be expected to waive their right to sue in order to receive the money. Lawsuits would only further injure this country and economy. There seem to be a number of misconceptions held by the families (as demonstrated by the interviews done on television). The government should press upon these families that parties regularly waive their right to sue when accepting a settlement. While I am sympathetic to their tragic losses, I, as someone who donated money to these people, am now hurt by the fact that this settlement, which far exceeds the average wrongful death settlement, does not seem to be enough for these families. The entire nation pulled together to support these people. They are now turning on the very people who rallied to help them by demanding the right to sue over a tragedy that could not have even been reasonably predicted. There is no claim here. The airlines were not negligent. They followed all the security measures required at the time. Nonetheless, the cost of litigating all the claims filed would be devastating for companies struggling to stay afloat. As previously stated, lawsuits would only force companies to do more lay-offs. Hasn't there been enough suffering? The current plan is generous and fair. The deductions being made are wholly appropriate. Further, any amount received from collateral sources should also be deducted. This is standard in determining tort damages. This case should be no different. Aside for my concerns about the estimated amount for household services, I feel it should be implemented in its current form. Thousands of people die unexpectedly and tragically in the country every year, and their families receive no compensation. We are being incredibly generous to these families. Shame on those who seek to take advantage of our generosity.
