I did not choose to be born gay. Regardless of choice, I am proud of both identifications. I live with my partner of four years. We own a house. We pay taxes. We worry about money. We discuss politics. We laugh and struggle and live. In every way we are the same as every other American couple in our subdivision. Except for one. If I had gone to work in the World Trade Center on September 11 and never come home, my partner would now be alone, devastated...and refused recognition by the Victim's Compensation Fund. Please do not allow this great tragedy to be compounded further by the prejudices and fear that is homophobia. I am a gay American. I would like to remain proud of both identities. Please reconsider granting compensation to the partners of the gay Americans who lost their lives on that terrible day.
