Sunday, March 31, 2002 4:07 PM Please rethink Allocation of 911 Victim Compensation Greetings, My name is , a resident of Louisville, KY and a lesbian. As with every other American, the events of 911 have been very damaging, not only to my spirit, but also to the conscious that I have for what "justice" will mean after such a horrific event. Part of this justice needs to come in the form of compensating those gay and lesbian partners of victims from the 911 terrorist attacks. I think it is absolutely dishonoring to the fabric of our country to not acknowledge and bring just compensation to the partners of individuals whose lives were lost. Despite what the misinformation might be about gay and lesbian couples the truth is that MANY of us have long-term and committed relationships that have enabled us to live in a joint relationship of interdependence. With this interdependence comes a trust that each partner will do his or her part in supporting the relationship emotionally and financially. When one of these partners dies, the repercussions, not only emotionally, but financially can be quite a burden. One that no one should have to suffer if there are means to lessen that burden. The United States has those means and responsibility to make this situation right and compensate the partners of those who lost their life-time partners in these three horrific attacks. I hope that you will reconsider your plans to exclude a large and most time unacknowledged part of our community.
