Tuesday, November 06, 2001 2:01 AM Sept. 11 Victim Compensation Fund I agree that the victims of the attacks deserve to be helped by the rest of America. This includes the thousands who were injured who it seems have been forgotten by the media. We should also help those who were put out of work for the next six months or so. According to the last count I have heard, Americans have donated almost $1.5 billion to aid these people. There are approximately 14,000 casualties, killed and wounded. If the money collected vy the various charities actually made its way to the victims and there families, this fund would almost be unnecessary. But when it appears that organizations such as the Red Cross are going to use less than 20% of the money they collected for the victims is actually going to be used for the victims, I think someone needs to get them to change their minds. I think that the people who will administer this fund should check into these organizations and see where the money is going. If all the money is not going to the victims then those who run these organizations should be charged with fraud. For example, when the Red Cross established their Liberty Fund, they claimed it was for the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks. They never said it was going to go into their general fund. When celebrities answered phones and musicians held concerts, they claimed the money was for these particular victims. Apparently it was an outright lie to collect funds, which seems to fit the definition of fraud. It should not matter that we are speaking of charities or non-profit organizations. Lies are lies and fraud is fraud.
