Saturday, March 16, 2002 1:01 PM Sept 11 Victims' Compensation Func Sir I am utterly stunned and outraged that the Victims Compensation fund includes fetuses and illegal immigrants but excludes gays and lesbians. The last time I checked, fetuses and illegal immigrants pay no taxes (from which this fund is taken), yet I, as a legally single man (despite being partnered for four years) pay the highest percentage of my income to the Federal government and people like me who lost loved ones in the attacks get nothing. I demand an immediate and acceptable expanation for this. Deferring to the States' laws is a huge "cop-out." The States are not paying for this, the federal government is, so the States have nothing to say about it. If it were up to the States, would it not make sense to disburse the funds to the States in proportion to the number of people each State lost? If it were up to the States, would illegal immigrants from California not be excluded because of ballot propositions over the past few years (as shameful as that is)? If this "public commentary" actually has any effect, I'm sure I won't be the last you hear from on this. Change your mind. It's not up to the States. It's up to you, and you alone, and failing to be fair about this fund will be on your shoulders alone.
