Saturday, January 26, 2002 12:53 PM 911/Victim Compensation The Following comments are not to mitigate the 911 survivors/victims' suffering nor begrudge them the money they are receiving : 1. How much are the families of the US military personnel killed in Afghanistan receiving for their deaths? SGLI is still only $2-300,000 I believe (and only if the service men/women purchased the full insurance benefit). Dependents will get DICOMP but does that average out to what the 911 victims will receive. Are not these families just as deserving? Should they not get the average $1.6 million going to the 911 victims. 2. The OKLA victims are right. What makes them different? McViegh was a homegrown terrorist, so may the Anthrax terrorist. Should they not be compensated also? 3. With the precedent of paying the victims of 911, how will the federal government ever pay all the survivors/victims if a terrorist group nuked a major city? 4. This precedent will also surely reinforce those who think the government or someone owes them something when faced with a personal tragedy. Will/can the federal government become the next insurance company for all things bad that happen to you? 5. Is the federal money offered in addition to the money the victims will receive from the charitable giving (not taxing)of the American people? 6. Finally, with all the carping supposedly being done by some of the 911 victims that the 1.6 million is not enough, I begin to resent the fact that this nations tax dollars are being spent. Not enough for them--what about the wives and families of a dead servicman. We all die and some of us will die accidentally. Most plan or insure for this event. I don't expect the Government to give my family $1.6 million when and if I die accidently. I think we are making bad policy/precedent. Thank you for your time.
