Saturday, January 26, 2002 10:41 PM 9/11 Victim Compensation I sympathize with the victims of 9/11. However, people die in accidents or as a result of crime across this nation every day. Where is the equity is victim compensation for 9/11 when there is no compensation for others. I strongly believe that individuals/families should have life insurance for the very possibility that accidents can happen - be it a car accident on the highway or a terrorist attack. I believe that the government should not compensate one victim unless ALL victims of accidents or crimes are compensated. I realize that this would be impossible and therefore charities should be encouraged. I further think that it would inequitable that firefighters and the like who died in 9/11 were compensated differently than any other firefighter etc. would be compensated at any other time in any other city. By the government sponsoring such victim compensation, it has started a practice which can not be sustained in an equitable manner and neither should it be. Where is the compensation for the armed forces, future victims of terrrorist attacks, future policeman shot in the line of duty, etc? Sooner or later you must admit that other victims will get nothing where others (namely 9/11) got a lot. How is this equitable??? It is too late to roll back time with respect to this bill but the government has out of a motive of sympathy acted unwisely and has opened up a proverbial can of worms.
