Wednesday, March 27, 2002 5:00 PM A shameful blot on the memory of all victims The decision to award compensation to virtually everyone BUT the surviving partners and children of gay men and lesbians is a dark blot on the memory of all who lost their lives on Sept. 11th. It is uncharitable, un-American, and unforgiveable. We hear a lot of rhetoric about so-called "special rights." Is this a "special right"? -- to be treated the same and mourned the same and to die the same as the thousands of other victims, but to be denied the same access to help with the rent, with the electric bill, with the funeral expenses, with the costs of carrying on when your partner and primary breadwinner has been murdered? Is this what George W. Bush meant when he talked of "compassionate conservatism"? Sure looks like the old-fashioned heartless and bigoted kind to me! Isn't it ironic that Osama Bin Laden would likely agree with such a policy? Please, put some common decency back into your deliberations and find a way to provide help and compensation to ALL those who lost their loved ones on Sept. 11th.
