Tuesday, January 22, 2002 9:38 AM Comments on the Proposed Rule I would like to submit the following comments on the regulations proposed as a "Victims Compensation Act": Yesterday on the news, we heard about how the US, who had already pledged $200 million some odd dollars in humanitarian aid to Afganistan was leading other countries toward contributing funds to rebuild Afganistan by pledging another $400 million some odd dollars. This morning on the news we heard that the Special Master and the Compensation Fund was limiting payouts to victims families to $1.6 million dollars. The Special Master was on the Today show this morning explaining why he would have to deduct from the $1.6 million dollar total any amounts that victim's families received from pensions/life insurance/etc. The juxtaposition of these news stories could boggle the mind. We are bargaining down the amount that we pay to victims families while at the same time pledging billions of dollars to rebuild the country that we are still in the process of destroying. The worst part about it is that Americans don't even seem to notice that a billion of their tax dollars is being spent to rebuild the damage done by billions of their other tax dollars. I think every American would prefer to have their tax money spent to compensate victims and their families. I will be copying members of Congress and the White House on this email, however, it is likely that they are too busy investigating someone shreading paper at Enron to notice. Perhaps one of you will read this and take some action on behalf of victims and taxpayers everywhere.
