Just as many heterosexual families were destroyed by the events on 9/11, so were many gay and lesbian families. Let's show ourselves to be human and recognize that all families that were affected should be treated equally: gay and lesbian families (recognized by the fact that they are same-sex couples who live at the same address, share financial responsibilities, and name each other as beneficiaries in wills and other legal documents) deserve the same compensation as others who were legally married and lost their spouse. The gay and lesbian families would have established the bond of marriage if it had been afforded them. Certain religious judgments aside, isn't it just humane to care equally about those who lost the person they cared for most in the world?
