This is my first chance to email you, and I just want to say that we are okay. I will talk to you later and at length, I'm sure, about the weeks events. It has been the most unreal thing, and Im sure that we will never be the same, who knows if any of us will. I bet it was particularly troubling for you, in that you have spent the most time here in NY --- its your town too. Everything I think to write or say about this sounds more and more like some terrible cliche. I dont know what else to say about it. I can now only recount the facts, the bare bones of what transpired, from my point of view. We had a straight-shot view of the twin towers and watched the fire burning, the second plane ram into the second tower, the fall of Tower #2, and the final death when Tower #1 collapsed. It was and still remains too much to put into words. It would have been quite different, still horrific, but so much more different had we not seen it -- in real time, looking at it from our windows. We were sitting around having a leisurely morning, sipping coffee and enjoying the quiet before Coy woke up. Call me whenever you can, email anytime. I am working tomorrow (Sat.), but otherwise -- anytime is good. It may sound strange, but Im glad that Im here. I think it would actually be too much to bear if we lived far away. We have done a lot of walking around the city since this happened. Everywhere you go, silence. People are so serious and sincere. It is easier to mourn here, everyone is feeling a lot of pain and some fear, I think, and at least you dont feel alone in the pain. Let me tell you, I dont think youd recognize the way it feels here right now. Its very strange, a bit spooky. F-16 fighter jets flying around constantly, police sirens and fire trucks, and people jump if they hear a big sound or boom but other than that...silence.
