Lou's cousin Horace died in the building; they grew up together but had not been in touch in a couple of years. To add to the sadness, Lou's mother is entering hospice tomorrow -- her cancer is no longer treatable. She has weeks without a miracle. Sept. 11 was a school day for me. I was xeroxing articles in Kinko's on Lex. and 78th Street and heard some people talking about a "movie" where a plane flew into the twin towers. I left Kinkos and saw huge plumes of smoke down Lexington, but still had no idea what it was. I entered Hunter and heard some people in the elevator talking about the same movie. Then I went into the classroom and my fellow students were dazed and confused over the events -- by now the second plane had hit. The head of the program came in and gave us the details and announced that all the other classes had been cancelled but, since we are DSW, we have the option of continuing (more capable? more sturdy?). No one wanted to continue -- a few people were in tears and terror since family members worked in or near the building -- but the professor insisted on at least reviewing the reading list for the next week! It was a very bad move. (Clearly, he was never a clinician.) Thank God no one in the class lost anyone in their immediate families. I am sorry for your student.
