Diner, Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences-Newark We have all been deeply hurt by the events of September 11. Our nation was viciously attacked by people who revile the civil liberties, religious freedom and pluralism that we so cherish as Americans. To the terrorists, the race, nationality, religion and social class of the Americans they killed matters not at all. I want to express my deep appreciation to our faculty, staff and students, who have come together to provide help to each other and to assist the victims of this terrible tragedy. The spirit of unity and common purpose on this campus has been truly inspiring. I want to encourage members of the campus community to continue organizing public forums, drawing upon our facultys expertise, to examine the unfolding events calmly and analytically. In this difficult time, and in the trying days that lie ahead, we must avoid venting our anger at the members of any religious, national, racial or ethnic group. To do so, as many have said, would play into the hands of those who hate us for our freedom and our diversity. Of all the institutions in our society, universities have a special obligation to reject bigotry. To fulfill our mission, we must treat every member of our community as an individual, and provide a safe space in which individuals can explore ideas and learn from each other. This obligation falls especially on Rutgers-Newark, ranked for five consecutive years as the nations most diverse national university. Every member of our faculty and staff must be sensitive to the diversity of our community. I will take appropriate action against any Arts & Sciences instructor, staff member or student who engages in harassment of individuals on the basis of their religion, nationality, race or ethnicity, or who incites hatred. We are all proud of our designation as the most diverse national university. It is now time to give that title real meaning. This is a defining moment for Rutgers-Newark.
