Class, I'm hoping and praying that we and all our loved ones are safe and secure on this terrible day. (Yes, I'm okay. My family is safe. Even my brother in law who works in NYC some of the time didn't leave New Jersey this morning, thank you God.) I'm completely freaked that two of the planes came from Logan in Boston. What is WRONG with our security systems???? And why was that plane allowed to fly in the restricted airspace over the Pentagon? I've definitely done way too much research on terrorism -- I know way too much and CNN isn't answering my questions!!!! Grrrr. Believe it or not, the most informative speaker on CNN this morning was Tom Clancy. He wasn't afraid to state his opinions.) I write about terrorism, but I couldn't have dreamed up something this devastating. As Americans, we've never faced a tragedy of this magnitude on our own soil. We've got to pull together now, and show the world what we're made of -- first making sure that our injured and survivors are cared for and that the rest of us are safe. Second, we need to make sure that we don't lash out blindly in retaliation. Let's find out who did this and make sure it never happens again. I know this is off topic, but I felt this couldn't go unmentioned, and I think we need to talk about this, so the ban on this off-topic conversation has been lifted for today at least. Just make sure you put something in the heading so that people can filter out this discussion from the regular class discussion. I just sent email to the coordinators, to see if we can't figure out some kind of check-in system to make sure everyone in the class is safe. In September, 2001, I was teaching an on line writing class -- done all through email. There were over 500 people in the class and they lived all over the world, including NYC and the DC area. I live in Boston and fly out of Logan all the time, and since many people in my class knew that I was actively promoting OVER THE EDGE, I received a great number of emails, concerned for my safety from people who feared I might have been on one of those planes.
