I usual enjoy a nice view of the city and the rising sun but this morning saw the Pentagon presented in front of me with a massive, 100 foot gash taken right out of the side closest to me. Black smoke still billows out of the impact area as well as from several points on the roof. Three fire truck towers can be seen above the roofline still pouring water onto rubble. The smoke travelled across the freeway and smells sharply of a burning toaster or electrical fire. Much of the Arlington area is covered in a dull haze. Saw an F-18 fly over the house this morning as I was getting the paper -- it was almost low enough for me to read the markings. The usual morning rumble of aircraft taking off from Reagan National airport about 4 miles east of our house has been replaced by the steady, dull roar of fighter aircraft in the distance as they fly orbits around the Capital region. Had a police car last night guarding the fire station down the street. Despite all of this, despite what happened in NYC, the buses and cars are still clogging the region's transit system, the metro is still running, and people were rolling into work. By 8:30 a.m. this morning, despite a wide security perimeter around the Hill, my office was as crowded as it always is by 8:30 a.m. I am pleased, and proud, to report that both the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives will convene this morning in their respective chambers at 10:00 a.m. for yet another session of the people's business.
