Hi Mom, Dad and Brian, As you know from my phone call and Matthew's e-mail, I'm safe and sound at Matthew's place. For the time being I think we're going to stay put here. There's no way for me to get home other than walking, anyway. This is the most horrendous thing I've ever witnessed. I'm really quite lucky... When I got of the [N] train downtown to go to my office, I was actually IN the World Trade Center on the Mezzanine level. This was just a minute or two after the first plane hit the north tower. People were running out of the building, screaming and crying and I didn't waste any time getting out of there. When I got outside, there was debris everywhere. It was smoky and there was a lot of ash and other stuff raining down. Had I been outside a few minutes earlier, I might have been hit by the large pieces that fell when the plane crashed into the tower... I quickly made my way to my office, dusted all of the soot off of me, called mom, and was talking to mom when the second explosion hit. At that point, I told everyone that we needed to get out of there and we all went downstairs and made our way uptown on foot. We kept glancing over our shoulders and it was unbelieveable to see those to big towers going up in flames. There was a huge, visible gash in the north tower where the first plane hit and I heard people saying that people were jumping from the upper floors. I tried not to look. I walked straight to Matthew's and we actually watched the towers collapse from the windows in his living room. I still really can't believe this has happened. It's so strange to look downtown and see nothing where two huge towers used to be. And there's still a lot of smoke and dust down that way, meanwhile it's a beautiful, dry sunny day in the rest of Manhattan and strangely calm -- with the exception of the fighter planes that keep flying over. People are milling about in the streets and everyone is just in shock... I can't imagine how many innocent people perished in this senseless tragedy, and I'm just really thankful to be alive.
