Tina At the time I e-mailed you yesterday I knew nothing of the horror that was unfolding in the US. I got Ronda back to my place at 08.30am your time and she was asleep before the first explosion at 08.58. I was in a meeting all afternoon and the first I knew about it was on my car radio at 12 noon your time/5pm here. I had said that I would let Ronda sleep off her jetlag until dinnertime, but I felt I had to waken her when I got home. You can imagine how shocked she was and there were several phone calls from her to her family ( in fact we couldn't even get a transatlantic phone line until 5pm/10pm ). Her mom was so happy and relieved that Ronda had gotten away from the country before all air traffic ceased. Ronda asks me to tell you and Christine that she is well, but obviously shaken. She and my girlfriend and myself just sat last night in silence and watched all the news channels until the wee small hours. May I take this opportunity on behalf of all my academic colleagues to express to you all our revulsion and our heartfelt sympathies for the collective trauma that you must all be experiencing at this time. We in Northern Ireland have known our own sorrows but not on the scale you have just endured.
