The sheer magnitude of the attack still seems somewhat surreal to me--I don't think I even know 5000 people total. It's hard for me to imagine that so many people are now just gone, just because some people decided that they wanted to either get some publicity or just plainly because they're nuts. Also, the willingness with which people seem to be willing to give up their civil liberties, and some of the paranoid reactions about closing borders, allowing monitoring of calls, and watching anyone who changes majors to things like piloting and nuclear engineering do make me nervous--the last thing we need is a police state. The way I see it, there are a million ways in which terrorists can wreak havoc, and if they have enough planning and resources, there's pretty much no way to stop that. The only thing you can do is try to make it difficult for terrorists to cause damage without living in paranoia--looking over your shoulder all of the time is no to enjoy life, and as we have seen, life is all too short, so every moment is precious.
