I then went back to the site of the first meeting (had left an engineer there and wanted to make sure she got out OK: it was her first-ever field call, but she had gotten out earlier and managed to call me from the subway in Rockville -- she asked what to do so I told her "just keep going"). from the mall I could see the smoke from the Pentagon fire but no evidence of fires/bombs at the State Dept. by then Rebecca had gotten through (cellular was useless for outbound but now and then an inbound call could get through), so I walked through gridlocked streets over to her work where we sat with her colleagues looking at horrific images on TV. upon learning the subway was operating we took it home. am at home for the moment, passing through on the way to the office, although I can't see how I'll get much of anything done. it's odd to not hear commercial air traffic passing overhead. military aircraft are operating in the vicinity - they have quite a different sound to them.
