I'LL NEVER FORGET IT WHEN OUR CHARGE RN CAME OUT OF THE DINING HALL AND SAID HE HAS JUST WATCHED A PLANE CRASH INTO THE SIDE OF ONE OF THE TWIN TOWERS. WITHIN MINUTES-ALL OUR STAFF WERE IN THE DINING HALL WATCHING IN TERROR AS THE LOCAL NEWS CHANEL REPORTED WITH LIVE COVERAGE OF THE EVENT. WE WATCHED IN TOTAL DISBELIEF-UNATTACHED FROM OURSELVES AS IF WE WERE IN A DAZE. TEARS ROLLED DOWN MANY OF OUR FACES,AS WE REALIZED WHAT WAS HAPPENING. MOMENTS OF PANIC BEGAN TO WAVE THROUGH THE STAFF AS OUR ATTENTIONS QUICKLY TURNED TO CONCERNS FOR FAMILY MEMBERS. WONDERING WHAT THE NEXT TARGET WOULD BE,ETC. WE KEPT THE NEWS ON TV AND THE RADIO SO ALL OF US COULD HEAR THE UPDATES. THIS TRAGIC EVENT WAS THE TOPIC OF CONVERSATION FOR WEEKS TO COME. JUST ABOUT EVERYONE I KNOW WAS SOMEHOW AFFECTED OR KNEW SOMEONE THAT WAS AFFECTED BT THIS TRADEGY. IT LEFT A LOT OF US QUESTIONING OUR SAFTEY,FEELING INSECURE,AND AFRAID FOR THE FUTURES OF OUR CHILDREN. PERSONALLY, I HAVE TO ADMIT THAT I WAS TERRIBLY AFRAID. MORE SO THAN I HAVE EVER BEEN IN MY ADULT LIFE. ( HEARING NEW YORK REFERRED TO AS A TARGET ZONE) FEELINGS OF INSECURITY, BETRAYAL, FEAR,UNCERTAINTY. THOSE FEELINGS ,HOWEVER, DID NOT LAST TOO LONG. WITH NEW REPORTS SHOWING ALL THE RELIEF EFFORTS,LOCALLY AND NATIONWIDE,EVEN WORLDWIDE IT SOON GAVE ME A FEELING OF CONTENTMENT IN SOMEHOW KNOWING WE AS A NATION WERE GOING TO BE ALL RIGHT...WE WERE PULLING TOGETHER TO HELP EACH OTHER...AND IN THIS ,FINDING ENORMOUS STRENGTH. THROUGH OUT ALL THIS, IF I'VE LEARNED NOTHING MORE IS THIS:IN ORDER TO APPRECIATE OUR STRENGTHS-WE NEED BE REMINDED OF OUR WEAKNESSES, OUR HUMANESS,AT TIMES BY A POWER IN WHICH WE NOT ALWAYS UNDERSTAND OR APPRECIATE. I'VE FOUND A NEW SENSE OF PATRIOTISM,AND LIKE MANY OTHERS, SHARE AN UNEXPLAINBLE SENSE OF PRIDE. NOT ONLY TO BE A NEW YORKER, BUT AN AMERICAN. WE REALLY DO HAVE AN AWFUL LOT TO THANKFUL FOR......
