911DA Story: Story
I was awakened by an early phone call, "Mom, turn on the TV." I saw Peter Jennings and started recording on video...I have over 16 hours on tape. I watch it from time to to remind me of lives lost, heroes taken, families devastated.
My youngest daughter was living in Manhatten, just blocks from the WTC, she has since moved to Colorado. I did not hear from her for over 6 hours and I could not get through on my cell phone. Huge anxiety set in. She often visited the WTC. Was she there today, I asked myself.
No, she wasn't, but she was in a state of shock and scared to death. She was watching the Today Show and Katie Couric said, "What was that!" My daughter heard it too.
I just wanted to take her in my arms and make her safe. We talked for a long time. I told her to go to the computer and start writing about her feelings and observations. She did and will pass it on to her children, so we will never forget. I told her she was at ground Zero during the most tragic time in American History.
I said this because my Mother was pregnant with me when Pearl Harbor was bombed. She did not know if he was alive or dead, he was in the Navy @ Pearl Harbor. He had left Pearl the night before on a Naval destroyer with a secret mission. I know I still feel the pain she felt while waiting to hear from my Dad, which did not happen for four months. He was not preent at my birth at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Virtginia.
