When the plane submerged itself into the outer ring of the Pentagon everything collapsed on to top of it and in effect after the force of the impact and explosion the fire was almost smothered. Thus at the impact location it was brought under control rather quickly. However, it seemed that it would occasionally start up again and only one hose was used to keep it under control. But little was done to control the offices to the north and south of the impact.
